When we decide what to include in Stories of Hope each month, we look for stories about activists and the work AJWS supports around the world that give all of us—our donors, staff, and grantees alike—a boost of optimism. As you know, fighting for human rights in 2026 is not an easy battle to wage.
This month, the choice was easy. We knew we had to transport you to Kenya.
One of AJWS’s human rights experts in Kenya, Elizabeth Okumu, just returned from the 5th annual Abortion and Reproductive Justice Conference in Nairobi, organized by several AJWS partner organizations. Nearly 1,000 activists, advocates, healthcare providers, and others, from over 68 countries, united with one mission: to build a future where all people have autonomy over their own bodies and decisions.
When we asked Elizabeth to reflect on this powerful gathering, she wrote: “As I stood amidst hundreds of brave people standing up for our rights, I felt hope I hadn’t experienced in a while.”
