Beyond the beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters near Malindi, Kenya are miles and miles of salt factories and salt harvesting fields. Salt companies have forcefully and illegally evicted rural communities from land that people have lived on and farmed for generations. These evictions have plunged people into poverty. The environmental degradation from the harvesting process has plagued local families with health problems and destroyed crops that people depend on for survival.
Fortunately, these communities in Kenya are fighting back. Two local advocacy groups, Malindi Rights Forum (MRF) and Kituo Cha Sheria, are educating residents about their rights and organizing them to defend their land from exploitation. AJWS is proud to support this crucial work. Watch our new video, just in time for Earth Day, which illustrates how communities in Kenya are overcoming the odds to defend their land and their lives.
AJWS’s work in countries and communities changes over time, responding to the evolving needs of partner organizations and the people they serve. To learn where AJWS is supporting activists and social justice movements today, please see Where We Work.
