AJWS Condemns Trump Administration Travel Ban

Senseless executive order will destabilize countries in conflict, says leading Jewish human rights organization

NEW YORK, NY – American Jewish World Service (AJWS) strongly condemns President Trump’s Executive Order banning travel from 12 countries, including several in which AJWS supports grassroots human rights organizations. This senseless and inhumane action fails at its ostensible objective of protecting Americans from harm. In fact, with the proposed terminations of Temporary Protected Status and Humanitarian Parole, this ban will compound challenges already faced by people from nations embroiled in political and humanitarian crises.

In addition, it will further destabilize countries, limit the flow of information and resources, and increase animosity toward the United States. By preventing those facing imminent danger from seeking safety, the U.S. is not only turning its back on people in need but endangering human life in nations dramatically upended by conflict.

“As a Jewish organization that esteems the contributions of all, we call on the Trump administration to reverse this inhumane order,” said Robert Bank, AJWS President and CEO. “This nation’s rich legacy is the product of welcoming, not refusing those in need.  In Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, conflict, prejudice, and poverty often compel people to find a new home. We cannot turn our backs on anyone seeking safety, dignity, and acceptance.”

This ban will be especially harmful for people living in places like Haiti, where violence has soared. Up to 90% of the capital city of Port-au-Prince is under gang control, and humanitarian and governance crises have left its citizens without viable options for security, stability, or economic livelihood.

Human rights progress is dependent upon drawing people together, not creating divisions among them. Communities—and countries—that welcome the refugee, the outsider, and the political exile gain strength and solidarity. That is a standard that the U.S. should set and values we should live by.
