New York (June 25, 2026)—American Jewish World Service (AJWS) condemns the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Haiti and Syria. The court’s decision threatens to upend the lives of families who have built their futures in this country and now face the prospect of being forced to return to conditions of severe instability, violence, and humanitarian crisis.
Among those most affected are 350,000 Haitian nationals who have sought safety in the United States while the island nation grapples with multiple overlapping challenges.
Haiti is enduring a devastating crisis marked by escalating gang violence, widespread displacement, political turmoil, economic collapse, and profound insecurity. More than 1.4 million people have been internally displaced while access to basic services, including healthcare, education, and food, remains severely constrained. Forcing people to return to such conditions raises profound humanitarian concerns. This decision is also incompatible with U.S. policy towards Haiti, which has been characterized by support for an international security mission and a “Do Not Travel” warning for Americans.
For decades, TPS has been an important avenue for people fleeing oppression, violence, and political persecution. The TPS program reflects America’s longstanding commitment to protecting oppressed and vulnerable communities. While the court’s decision allows the administration to move forward with ending these protections, it does not diminish the moral imperative to treat all people with dignity, respect, and compassion.
American Jewish World Service remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for policies that protect people fleeing violence, persecution, and political instability. We will continue fighting alongside our grantee partners for dignity, respect, and basic human rights for all.
