Julie Gersten

Julie Gersten is a senior program officer in the department of experiential education at American Jewish World Service. In her role, she is responsible for developing and implementing experiential curricula and programs to engage American Jews in the pursuit of global justice. Prior to joining AJWS, Julie worked as a paralegal for a civil rights attorney focusing on police misconduct litigation in New York and a fundraiser at the New Israel Fund. She holds an MSc in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and a BA in Political Science from Vassar College. Julie lives in Laguna Beach, California with her husband and son. What do you feel when you hear about a child who died of Ebola in Liberia? Or when you watch a video about a woman living in poverty who survives domestic violence in Nicaragua against incredible odds? There are moments when I am able to open myself up to feelings of empathy and to grapple with such suffering. Other times, my reaction is to feel grateful for my own life and recognize what a privilege it is that these stories feel so distant. I say, “I can’t possibly imagine what that must be like” and, “I am so blessed.” While both of those statements are true, I also recognize that they enable me to feel disconnected and removed, to go on with my life as though nothing happened.
