Washington, D.C. – Randy Berry, newly appointed as the first ever U.S. State Dept. Special Envoy for the Human Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons, will speak at the American Jewish World Service (AJWS) Policy Summit on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the Washington Court Hotel, 525, New Jersey Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. Berry will be joined by Dr. Hilda Tadria, founder and current executive director of the Mentoring and Empowerment Program for Young Women (MEMPROW).
Berry was appointed Special Envoy by U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry on February 23, 2015, and officially assumed his post on April 14. AJWS, the leading international Jewish development and human rights organization, mobilized its grassroots effort to lobby for the appointment. Berry is a veteran diplomat who has served posts in New Zealand, Nepal, Bangladesh, Egypt, Uganda and South Africa.
Dr. Hilda Tadria from Uganda, is Founder and current Executive Director of the Mentoring and Empowerment Program for Young Women (MEMPROW), and co-founder of the African Women’s Development Fund, will also speak. Dr. Tadria served as Regional Advisor on Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa and has worked as a consultant on gender and development with the World Bank, UNDP, UNIFEM and governments within the Africa region.
Since MEMPROW, an AJWS grantee, was established in 2008, it has provided direct training to thousands of girls and boys in and out of school throughout Uganda to help them advocate for themselves. MEMRPOW seeks to equip girls with skills and build their self-esteem and confidence in order to overcome sexist barriers to their advancement, which are enforced by teachers, family members, and other authority figures in the community.
Dr. Tadria previously served as Regional Advisor on Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa and has worked as a consultant on gender and development with the World Bank, UNDP, UNIFEM and governments within the Africa region.
