AJWS Statement on the Passing of Senator Frank Lautenberg

New York, NY; June 3, 2013—

American Jewish World Service President Ruth Messinger released the following statement today in response to the passing of Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ).

“Today we lost a great senator, a great human rights advocate and a great man,” said Messinger. “Frank Lautenberg embodied the idea that being Jewish means standing up for a better world. During the more than 30 years he spent in public service, Senator Lautenberg worked tirelessly on behalf of women and children, victims of human rights crimes and the LGBTI community. From authoring an amendment to permanently overturn the ‘Global Gag Rule’ to helping to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell to co-sponsoring a resolution calling for peace in Darfur, Senator Lautenberg always did what he thought was best for humankind. He was an extraordinary hero, a serious progressive and his presence will truly be missed in the Senate and the Jewish world.”
