Every day, we at AJWS support advocates worldwide who literally risk their lives to fight for democracy and human rights and to protect the earth from destruction wrought by mines, oil rigs and other exploitative development projects that poison the air and water people depend on to survive. These two fights are often one and the same.
That’s why we oppose President-Elect Trump’s nomination of Rex Tillerson, Chief Executive of Exxon Mobil, to serve as the next U.S. Secretary of State. Tillerson is the leader of one of the world’s largest energy corporations, which has polluted the global environment and used its resources for over 40 years to suppress climate science. Even more disturbing is that under his leadership, Exxon nurtured close relationships with dictators. Tillerson’s company violated the land rights of indigenous people in Africa and Asia—the very people we at AJWS defend every day.

A U.S. Secretary of State must stand up for democratic values, and civil and political rights globally. Tillerson’s record, tragically, indicates he will do none of this.
As Jews and global citizens who cherish this earth and respect the rights of all who live upon it, we must reaffirm our commitment to reversing climate change and to advancing human rights worldwide. The stakes are high and the time is now.
