A few weeks ago, I wrote about Cambodian farmers’ fight for land rights in a country where land grabs are disturbingly common. An estimated 85 percent of Cambodian households lack land titles. Many villages lose their livelihoods as a result of the Cambodian government routinely leasing large tracts of rural land for agro-industrial exploitation.
Over the past 30 years, illegal logging coupled with rapid development and population growth had stripped Cambodia of many of its forests. But now, community forestry projects are helping Cambodians reverse this trend of land-loss.
A bunch of local villagers in the eastern province of Kampong Thom have signed a deal with Cambodian authorities and have now legally protected the Prey Rong Knong forest. Hooray! Learn more at AlertNet.
