Overview of AJWS

American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is the leading Jewish organization working to promote human rights and end poverty in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. AJWS advances the health and rights of women, girls and LGBTQI+ people; promotes civil and political rights; defends access to food, land and water; and aids communities in the aftermath of disasters. We pursue lasting change by granting investing approximately $40 million annually in our grantmaking and social change strategies. We support to more than 500 grassroots and global human rights organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean and by mobilizing mobilize our community in the U.S. to advocate for global justice. Overview of Division

AJWS’s Programs Division works to build civil society in select countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia by supporting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) that are advancing human rights. AJWS partners with organizations that work on four critical issues:

  • Land, Water & Climate Justice: Defending the Rights to Food, Water, Land and Livelihoods
    AJWS supports organizations that advocate for the rights of rural, indigenous and poor communities who are displaced from their land or prevented from earning a living because of mining, dams and other development that threaten their way of life.
  • Sexual Health and Rights: Advancing the Rights of Women, Girls and Sexual Minorities
    AJWS works to increase access to services and end discrimination, violence and abuse of women, girls, LGBTI people and sex workers, so that they can access the full spectrum of opportunities in society and live in health, safety and dignity.
  • Civil and Political Rights: Promoting Recovery from Conflict and Oppression
    AJWS supports communities to recover from conflict and oppression, speak out against injustice and create vibrant, peaceful, societies that respect the rights of all citizens.
  • Humanitarian Response: Supporting Local Communities in Crises
    AJWS prioritizes support for local, grassroots groups that work to meet the unique needs of historically marginalized communities in the wake of disasters so that they can recover fully and become more resilient to future crises.

Job Summary

AJWS’s Washington, DC office is responsible for carrying out the organization’s advocacy priorities on human rights in the Global South. Working with the U.S. Congress, Executive branch agencies, and peer advocacy NGOs, the DC office works to create an enabling U.S. foreign policy environment globally and in the communities of our 450 grantees in 19 countries around the world.

The DC-based Policy Advisor is charged with carrying our AJWS’s government affairs strategy to pursue U.S. foreign policies, spending, and diplomacy to advance the human rights of women and girls, LGBTQI+ people, and sex workers. In supporting these communities, the Policy Advisor works with Congress, the Administration and NGO coalitions on an array of sexual health and rights (SHR) issues, including reproductive justice, HIV/AIDS prevention, and diplomacy to support LGBTIQ+ rights.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design and implement AJWS’s sexual health and rights advocacy strategy, focusing on shaping the U.S. government’s approach and response to LGBTQI+ rights, reproductive justice, sex worker and adolescent girls’ rights, and human rights-based approaches to HIV/AIDS via funding, policies and legislation, as a key part of the full US Advocacy strategy;
  • Strengthen AJWS’s relationship with stakeholders in the U.S. Congress and relevant Executive Branch agencies;
  • Participate and lead in sector and population- specific coalitions that implicate the rights of AJWS’s partners, including those reproductive justice, human rights defense, LGBTQI+ rights, HIV prevention, sex worker rights, and interfaith advocacy;
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the full Advocacy team, which includes staff in NY and DC working elevating human rights in U.S. foreign policy and international advocacy;
  • Participate in programmatic discussions with the advocacy and grantmaking teams to ensure synergy, collaboration and coordination that drives AJWS’s DC-based advocacy to highlight grantee needs/priorities;
  • Regular communications, monitoring and evaluation of advocacy work across the organization, including weekly meetings and regular monitoring and evaluation of the advocacy program; and
  • Support cross-organizational initiatives including press statements and communications work, petition and op-ed writing, grant review, and planning AJWS’s annual Rabbinic Lobby Day.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree, plus 5-7 years of work experience;
  • Strong persuasive written and oral advocacy skills;
  • Past experience working productively in coalition spaces;
  • Past engagement with one or more of AJWS’s priority issues (HIV, LGBTI rights, reproductive justice, sex worker rights, and gender justice) in a federal advocacy or policymaking perspective;
  • Fluency in Congressional procedure around international affairs, including the relationship between Authorizing and Appropriations committees. Basic familiarity with the Executive Branch regulatory process (including notice and comments) preferred;
  • Deep commitment to supporting the human rights of people who are most marginalized, including LGBTI people (with a focus on lesbian, bi, queer women, transgender and intersex persons), women and girls (particularly adolescent girls and their sexual rights), people living with/at disproportionate risk of HIV, and sex workers;
  • Commitment to an intersectional and root-cause approach to human rights advocacy that incorporates race, class and ethnicity, among other factors into AJWS’s SHR advocacy portfolio;
  • Basic familiarity with human rights philanthropy;
  • Past experience working, living, or travelling in the Global South strongly preferred;
  • The ability to travel internationally as needed, at least once annually and domestically, at least quarterly.
