International Advocacy Intern

Internship Summary

The Intern will support AJWS’s international advocacy efforts, with a focus on implementation of the organization’s global strategy on the sexual health and rights of adolescent girls, in particular addressing child, early and forced marriage. The Intern will play a supportive role across the multi-dimensional advocacy portfolio, including in the areas of outreach to advocacy audiences, event planning and execution, research and communications, and liaising with grantee partners.

The Intern will gain the following skills:

  • The intern will learn about:
    • The causes and consequences of child marriage on the lives of adolescent girls and how this issue sits in the broader context of human rights and international development
    • Who the key actors are at global and local levels working on child marriage and adolescent girls’ rights
    • Different approaches taken by key organizations to address child marriage
    • Key strategies for successful high-level advocacy

Key Responsibilities:

  • Updating database of key advocacy targets and global and regional advocacy moments
  • Supporting logistics for grantee partner and AJWS staff engagement/events (i.e. at UN)
  • Light background research, fact-checking, formalizing research citations, copy-editing

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Interest in and commitment to advancing gender equality, the rights of women and girls and the human rights of all people
  • Highly organized and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both in formal writing as well as inter-personal
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a variety of staff; strong problem-solving skills and positive attitude towards overcoming challenges and obstacles
  • Experience with basic desk research desired
  • Basic understanding of either human rights, international development, women’s and girls’ rights or other global policy issues and actors is a plus

How to Apply:

This is a 10-week program, beginning June 11th and concluding August 16th. It is designed for students who have completed at least one year at a college or university. The internship is unpaid but interns may apply for credit or funding through their college or university.
