About the Department

AJWS’s Los Angeles office is responsible for overseeing and implementing the vision of AJWS in Southern California. The scope of responsibilities includes raising funds in this region, maintaining relationships with key donors and stakeholders, building AJWS’s community in LA and the Southern California region, envisioning and executing special events and targeted communications for AJWS supporters, and effectively articulating AJWS’s global purpose and impact.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, AJWS Southern California, the primary responsibility of the Senior Development Officer is to grow the AJWS donor base with new gifts from high net-worth individuals and family and professional foundations while deepening relationships with current major donors and family foundations within Southern California. As a member of a fast paced, high-energy regional team, the Senior Development Officer will work closely with the Los Angeles team and colleagues in New York and liaise with key constituents and board members to help achieve key organizational outcomes for the office.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop clear short-term and long-range plans for fundraising in Southern California that are both realistic and challenging;
  • Steward and solicit a portfolio of individuals and family foundation donors in Southern California who annually contribute gifts of $2,500 or more to AJWS;
  • Identify and cultivate a pipeline of prospective donors, enlisting their support of AJWS;
  • Conduct prospect research on current and prospective donors in concert with the Development staff in the New York office;
  • Increase the visibility of AJWS in Southern California, and particularly in the Jewish community, by representing the organization at select community events;
  • Plan, execute and staff fundraising events for donors and prospects throughout Southern California
  • Organize meetings for AJWS’s President and CEO; the Director, Southern California; and other members of the Executive Team and board members;
  • Conduct regular analysis and reporting of revenue goals against projections;
  • Speak and write articulately about American Jewish World Service, its mission, policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs and finances;
  • Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, social and community trends in Southern California;
  • Manage administrative tasks necessary for portfolio management.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of AJWS with the ability to serve as a compelling ambassador for the organization;
  • At least 5 years of experience in development with a proven track record in successful major gift fundraising, specifically with face-to-face solicitations, and understanding of effective strategies for organizational growth;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and familiarity with Jewish philanthropic and social justice communities and key stakeholders in the Los Angeles and the greater Southern California region;
  • The ability to build and maintain strong relationships with constituents of varied backgrounds;
  • Experience in prospect research and Raisers Edge, (or comparable fundraising system);
  • Self-starter with proven ability managing multiple projects and maintaining disciplined adherence to program goals;
  • Exceptional analytical, strategic planning, and research skills;
  • High degree of flexibility and an ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as required to achieve organizational objectives;
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally, domestically and internationally (approximately 10-15% travel).
