Overview of AJWS

Inspired by the Jewish commitment to justice, American Jewish World Service (AJWS) works to realize human rights and end poverty in the developing world. AJWS advances the health and rights of women, girls and LGBT people; promotes recovery from conflict, disasters and oppression; and defends access to food, land and livelihoods. AJWS pursues lasting change by supporting grassroots and global human rights organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and by mobilizing supporters in the U.S. to advocate for global justice. Position Summary

Based on program priorities, primary responsibilities include:

Strategic Planning and Analysis

  • Develop and share analysis on sexual health and rights, exclusion based on ethnicity including, Dominicans of Haitian descent, inequality and Dominican social movements.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of AJWS thematic, country-based strategies.
  • Develop an analysis of current events that affect the political, economic and social context of AJWS grantmaking in country.

Support for AJWS Partners

  • Provide technical support for partners in areas such as report development, developing terms of reference, and strategic planning.
  • Contribute to the development of proposals and budgets with partners.
  • In collaboration with partners, evaluate institutional needs and develop recommendations of capacity building priorities.
  • Maintain continuous coordination, communication and support with partners through email, telephone, and site visits.
  • Support partner safety and security response, based on context and need.
  • Provide recommendations regarding existing gaps and practices to strengthen donor support for grassroots organizations.
  • Participate and provide support in planning and implementing meetings and exchanges between AJWS partners.

Communications and external relations

  • Provide logistic support and accompaniment to AJWS staff and groups of persons affiliated with AJWS, including delegations.
  • Represent AJWS in forums, meetings, and regional conferences.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of professional experience in Dominican Republic social movements, working on sexual health and rights and/or civil and political rights.
  • Minimum of 8 years combined professional and non-professional experience (activist, volunteer, etc.) in Dominican social movements.
  • Proven knowledge of human rights issues, specifically with regards to AJWS’s priority areas: LGBT communities, sex workers, Dominicans of Haitian descent, migrants, and social movements in the Dominican Republic.
  • Ability to identify partner capacity gaps and make recommendations for capacity building.
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategies to support capacity building.
  • Experience in developing project proposals, budgets, and reports for donors.
  • Proven experience in communicating and working with grassroots organizations and with diverse communities, including LGBT communities, sex workers, Dominicans of Haitian descent, etc.
  • Experience working with the international donor sector, a plus.
  • English or Kreyol written and oral proficiency, a plus.
