Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California, elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. He pushed for an ambitious progressive reform agenda, including a groundbreaking bill banning discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and employment on the basis of sexual orientation, which later became law. Today, AJWS helps local activists fight for the same freedoms while advocating against discriminatory laws and restrictions.
