Human Resources Generalist (New York, NY)
Job Description
AJWS is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic human resources generalist to join its Human Resources (HR) team. HR is an active department meeting the day-to-day needs of a dynamic and evolving 100-plus global workforce while developing foundational HR tools, policies, protocols and practices.
Reporting to the director of human resources, the hr generalist will play a key role in supporting the myriad functional areas of human resources including staffing and recruitment, employee relations, regulatory compliance, compensation and benefits administration, learning and development, and performance management. The successful candidate will be able to balance their role of contributing to the development of a high performance culture that emphasizes learning, empowerment, collaboration and innovation while always keeping an eye toward maintaining regulatory compliance and managing organizational risk.
Responsibilities
- Advise and counsel managers and employees on a wide range of employment-related issues (FMLA; ADA; staffing; compensation, etc), ensuring consistent application of policies, procedures and practices;
- Maintain knowledge of legal requirements and monitor employment legislation and trends; ensure regulatory compliance with all applicable state and federal laws;
- Manage employee benefit plans with specific responsibility for vendor relations, maintaining up-to-date summary plan descriptions, oversight of employee enrollment and deactivation processes, conducting RFP's, presenting price comparisons, and vendor selection and implementation;
- Work with director of hr to implement enhancements to the performance review process (develop new tools; build competency models; train managers and staff);
- Benchmark best practices for personnel policies, procedures and programs in the international development and Jewish communities and evaluate AJWS policies and practices against them; make policy and practice recommendations that are consistent with the philosophies and culture of the organization;
- Identify process improvements and implement solutions that will enhance delivery of hr services and/or improve departmental functioning;
- Promote a learning culture by partnering with departments to identify and implement training solutions that will enhance staff competencies, knowledge and abilities;
- Write employee communications and lead training sessions on HR related topics;
- Conduct exit interviews and summarize information, identifying key issues and trends;
- Develop and implement a plan to build a repository of current AJWS job descriptions;
- Improve the quality and efficiency of HR reporting; prepare ad hoc HR reports as requested (headcount, turnover, compensation);
- Lead special projects as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree; master's degree in a related field preferred.
- 4-6 years of progressive leadership experience in HR positions;
- In-depth knowledge of domestic employment laws and practices required; knowledge of international human resources a plus;
- Experience in the administration of benefits and compensation programs; ability to run an RFP and vendor selection process independently;
- Flexible and willing to adapt practices based on the needs of the organization;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable with public speaking;
- Exceptionally organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated; must have a proactive and creative problem-solving approach to resolve issues in a timely manner;
- Solutions-oriented and able to effectively manage issues to a successful resolution;
- Ability to develop relationships across the organization;
- Customer service orientation;
- Exhibit sound judgment relating to confidential matters;
- Proven ability to lead a project from inception through implementation;
- Enthusiastic team player willing to pitch in to get the job done;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; demonstrated skills in database management and recordkeeping;
- Work experience in not-for-profit environment a plus.
