Careers at AJWS
2010 Summer Internship Program
AJWS is currently accepting applications for the 2010 summer internship program. This 10-week program is an opportunity to work alongside AJWS's staff, experience the many mechanisms that come together to create an effective nonprofit organization, gain exposure to the progressive Jewish community and learn about Jewish perspectives on global justice and international grassroots development.
Participants of AJWS's internship program are expected to work 35 hours per week over the course of a 10 week program commencing on Monday, June 7, 2010 and concluding on Friday, August 13, 2010.
One of the primary goals of AJWS's internship program is to educate interns about the entire spectrum of AJWS's work. In addition to their day to day responsibilities, interns are offered a number of other learning opportunities including:
- Lunch with AJWS president, Ruth Messinger
- Informational meetings with each member of our executive team and representatives from each department
- Lunch with one of AJWS's board members
- Depending on scheduling, brownbag presentations with speakers from AJWS grantees and volunteer service programs
- Field trips to other like-minded, social justice, international development or Jewish nonprofits
- Participation in an "Impact Project" where interns identify ways to contribute to AJWS by proposing ways to make a positive contribution or change within their department or across the organization.
Interns are needed in New York, NY Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA, and will be placed in one or more of our departments, including international grantmaking, fundraising and development, communications, education and community engagement, advocacy, service or technology.
In previous years interns worked on projects such as:
- Conducting research on key issues around global AIDS, public health issues and human rights and developing talking points, issue briefs and other written materials based on findings.
- Assessing the landscape of different North American Jewish communities by creating Jewish Community Profiles which detail synagogues, Hillels, camps, day schools, Jewish Federations, and other Jewish Institutions in cities across the US.
- Assisting MIS help desk staff with standardizing software installations and security updates and going out on help desk calls.
- Writing, editing and production of website and video content along side members of the communications department.
- Supporting On1foot.org, AJWS's open-source online database of Jewish texts on social justice, by monitoring and approving Jewish text submissions, searching for and adding new texts and making design adjustments.
