Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (Astraea Foundation)

Organization

  • Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (Astraea Foundation)
  • Founded in 1977, the Astraea Foundation is the only philanthropic institution in the world solely dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and intersex (LGBTI) organizations in both the United States and internationally. The Astraea International Fund for Sexual Minorities, established in 1996, was the first institutional fund in the U.S. devoted to supporting LGBTI organizations worldwide. Since its inception, it has invested in innovative human rights advocacy organizations in over 70 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Its hallmark has been its ability to reach and incubate and build capacity of LGBTI organizations in every region of the world. Through Astraea’s funding support, many grantees emerge as agents of institutional and policy change, drive media and human rights campaigns, and provide support and safety for highly marginalized communities.
