How to Apply
Volunteer Summer 2012: Summer 2012 Application
AJWS Volunteer Summer is accepting applications on a rolling basis for our college-aged programs to Uganda and India. Placements are still available, please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for the program.
We are no longer accepting applications for the high school program to Ghana.

Program Dates: The program runs from June 17 to August 10. Orientation will be in New York City from June 17 to June 19, with participants leaving for their country of service on June 19. Participants will return to the United States August 7 for a three day training that runs through August 10. The second training will take place in February/March 2013.
Program Locations: Volunteer Summer high school students will travel to Ghana. Volunteer Summer college students will travel to Uganda or India.
Please have the following items ready when you begin:
- Your passport number and expiration date
- The names, phone numbers and email addresses of two references
- The names, phone numbers and email addresses of two emergency contacts
- Your short answer questions prepared in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
Please answer the following questions in 3-4 sentences each (approximately 100-200 words).- What inspired you to apply for Volunteer Summer this year in particular? What are you excited to learn (from your AJWS group and the local community)? What are you excited to share (with your AJWS group and the local community)?
- Following the summer, participants engage in domestic programming that includes educational retreats, public speaking engagements, article writing and volunteer service projects. Where do you plan to be during the next academic year? How do you envision the domestic piece of the program being a part of those plans?
- What do you think will be most challenging for you about participating in Volunteer Summer?
- Your essays prepared in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
Please answer the following questions in 2-3 paragraphs each (approximately 300-500 words).- Over the summer, participants experience an immersive service-learning program that includes group living and learning, Jewish pluralism, a physical labor project, modest accommodations, community exchange and firsthand exposure to poverty. Please comment on your understanding of and interest in each of these program components.
- Describe a time when you interacted with someone who was different from you. What approach did you take? Is there anything you would have done differently? What was challenging and what was rewarding about the experience?
- Optional: Your résumé or CV in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
Application Materials
AJWS assesses each applicant's compatibility with our program through a written application and references. In order for an application to be considered, AJWS must receive all application materials by the deadline.

Eligibility
Before applying to Volunteer Summer please ensure you meet the eligibility requirements.
Participants in Volunteer Summer must be willing to abide by the participant commitment statement.
Location Requests
When you apply to Volunteer Summer, you are applying to participate in the program, not to volunteer in a particular country or with a specific NGO. College students may rank their placement preferences in the application and AJWS strives to place volunteers according to those preferences, but AJWS also tries to create groups of participants with diverse backgrounds.
