How to Apply
The application for Volunteer Summer 2011 will be posted in late autumn 2010. Please have the following items ready when you begin:
- Your passport number and expiration date
- The names and email addresses of two references
- The names, phone numbers and email addresses of two emergency contacts
- Your essays prepared in Microsoft Word or PDF format. Please answer the following questions in three pages or fewer.
- Why do you want to participate in AJWS Volunteer Summer?
- The challenges of living in the developing world, working on projects that require physical stamina, handling the daily stresses of a group and being immersed in a new culture can often be overwhelming. Describe a challenging event in your own life and what you learned about yourself.
- Describe a cross-cultural experience that has shaped your values or beliefs.
- Following the summer, participants engage in domestic programming that includes educational retreats, public speaking engagements, article writing and volunteer service projects. Where do you plan to be next year and what do you hope to get out of this part of the program?
- Optional: Your résumé or CV in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
Application Materials
AJWS assesses each applicant's compatibility with our program through a written application, interview and references. In order for an application to be considered, AJWS must receive all application materials by the deadline.

A schedule of information sessions for 2011 will be available in late 2010
Eligibility
Before applying to Volunteer Summer please ensure you meet the eligibility requirements.
Participants in Volunteer Summer must be willing to abide by the participant commitment statement.
Location Requests
Many applicants express a preference to volunteer in a particular country; however, AJWS does not guarantee that it will honor placement requests. An application to Volunteer Summer is an application to the program, not to work in a particular community.
