Program costs

There is no program fee to participate in AJWS Volunteer Corps.

Transportation

AJWS pays for the lowest available roundtrip airfare between the volunteer's home city and the assignment location for an itinerary based on the start and end dates of the volunteer assignment. Any extra travel costs incurred due to personal travel must be paid by the volunteer. Volunteers must arrange their own travel plans through AJWS's travel agent or on their own. If a volunteer chooses to depart from a placement early for any reason other than a personal or family emergency, he or she must reimburse AJWS the full cost of his or her plane ticket.  Please note that AJWS pays for airfare only for volunteers who permanently reside in the United States.

Accommodations

Volunteers are responsible for all costs related to their housing, though AJWS will provide assistance in locating and securing housing. Usually volunteers live in rented apartments with running water and electricity. Other types of accommodation include hotels, hostels, boarding or home stays. Air-conditioning may or may not be available. Some volunteers secure accommodation prior to arrival and others stay in a guest house or hotel for a few days while seeking accommodations.

Visa

Volunteers are responsible for obtaining a visa to their country of service, if one is required, and are financially responsible for any visa fees.

Health Insurance

In the case of a medical emergency, all participants receive emergency evacuation assistance and medical referrals through International SOS, a well-respected medical assistance provider. International SOS does not pay for the cost of medical care; therefore, participants must have their own health insurance that covers the cost of treatment while overseas.

Medical Preparation

Volunteers are responsible for speaking to their doctors regarding any preventative medical treatments (immunizations, anti-malarial pills, etc.) prior to travel, and are financially responsible for these costs.
