Alternative Breaks

Make this break count!

AJWS Alternative Breaks (ABs) are one-week to 10-day international service-learning programs for college students. Participants promote social change in the developing world by volunteering with one of AJWS's grassroots partners, and explore the relationship between social justice, service and Judaism.

In collaboration with local grassroots non-governmental organizations (NGOs), participants work side-by-side with community members on projects that help build infrastructure and sustainability. Past AB groups have laid irrigation systems, built schools and community centers and planted trees or crops. As an integral part of the experience, the group gathers each day to study social justice and international development-related topics through a Jewish lens. Participants also plan a meaningful Shabbat that highlights the challenges and rewards of pluralistic Jewish communities.

This international experience lays the foundation for social justice engagement upon return, which includes opportunities for public speaking, writing, advocacy and volunteer service. Participants return to their universities inspired by what they have seen and accomplished, and motivated to become advocates for social justice at home and around the world.

Planning an AJWS Alternative Break is a collaborative effort between AJWS and a college-based organization. Students who wish to participate in an AJWS AB should contact their Hillel or another Jewish organization on campus. Staff members of these organizations who wish to plan an AB can learn more about how to apply.
